When it comes to the culinary delights of the Alps, few dishes can rival the warm, gooey goodness of traditional Savoyard Raclette. This hearty meal not only warms the body but also brings people together, making it a perfect dining experience and that's why our lovely Driver/Hosts serve up a superb Savoyard Raclette for you at Alpinium on the Chalet Hosts' night off. Let’s dive into the history of this beloved dish, what it involves, and why it’s an interactive highlight of a holiday with us.
Raclette has its roots not in the French Alps surprisingly, but in the Swiss Alps dating back to the 13th century. However the name itself comes from the French word "racler," meaning "to scrape." It is said that farmers would melt cheese over an open fire and scrape it onto boiled potatoes, gherkins and cured meats – a simple yet satisfying meal after a long day in the fields. Over time, the dish made its way to the Savoie region of France, evolving into the Raclette we know today.
Traditionally, Raclette cheese is made from unpasteurized cow’s milk and has a creamy texture with a slightly nutty flavour. It’s this cheese that takes center stage in the Raclette experience, melting beautifully and transforming meals into a feast of flavours and textures.
At Alpinium, we believe that dining should be an experience, not just a meal! Our Raclette evenings are designed to immerse you in this delightful tradition. Our Driver-Hosts lovingly prepare the table with Raclette grills and a range of dishes and condiments, allowing you to melt your cheese to perfection right at your table.
1. Select Your Cheese: We offer high-quality Raclette cheese sourced from local producers, ensuring an authentic taste. Places slices of cheese on the cheese ‘shovel’ and place under the grill until melted and bubbling.
2. Gather Your Accompaniments: You can choose from a variety of accompaniments such as boiled potatoes, charcuterie, pickles, salad and vegetables (which you can cook on the top side of the Raclette grill).
3. Melt and Enjoy: Once the cheese has melted under the grill, you scrape it onto your selected sides, normally the potatoes. It’s absolutely delicious along with some French charcuterie and a gherkin!
4. Enjoy and have fun: The communal nature of Raclette dining encourages conversation and connection with our guests and that’s why everyone has become so fond of the evening. You can share your favourite moments of the day, swap stories and enjoy a relaxed atmosphere that truly embodies the spirit of the Alps.
