Best place to learn to ski - La Rosiere wins by a country mile!

As an ex ski instructor, I have a pretty good grip on what beginner skiers love and dislike about their first week on skis.

Among the dislike list for nervous beginners are;

  • “the runs are too narrow”
  • “too many people skiing up behind me”
  • "its too steep!"
  • “where’s the sun?”
  • “I need a rest”.

La Rosiere has built its reputation on family skiing at its best. Big, wide-open runs on huge wide south facing sunny slopes, close to a good choice of eateries with a budget for everyone. Huge investment has been put into la Rosiere in the last 10 years that has bought the resort up to scratch with its better-known competitors, making this resort a massive favourite for beginners and intermediates.  La Rosiere is linked to La Thuile in Italy making it a fairly big resort.

As your skills develop throughout the week, most beginners can make the link over to Italy concluding a fabulous week. So its a target of achievement and an exciting trip to look forward to.

La Rosiere is at 1850mts, a high-altitude resort and new lifts added in the last couple of years whizz you up to 3,000mts. There are almost 200kms of skiable pistes, making it big enough for a good week skiing. It’s steeped in history too with its own fort at the top of the mountain, it’s the home of the St. Bernard dog and history suggests that they Roman conqueror, Hannibal took his elephants over the Alps here.

It’s a lovely village too, stylishly constructed and with lots to do. A free bus service gets you around town and to and from the slopes which are very close to most accommodation choices. It's easy to get into town for the nightlife and restaurants and last year they added an all-weather all season luge for a fun thing to do when not skiing. Theres also an ice rink and a bowling alley and a cinema with English language films each week.

So, la Rosiere is a fabulous place to go, it's pretty, its high and the slopes won't disappoint you. I lived there for ten years, the south facing views are beautiful and we have two beautiful picture postcard chalets set in the forest close by with those amazing views, each with a hot tub and sauna.

Gets my vote every time.
