Discover the Rich History of Méribel: A Must-Visit Destination for UK Skiers

With its captivating blend of traditional Alpine architecture, stunning natural beauty and vibrant ski culture, this enchanting resort has become a favourite among UK skiers. As winter approaches, let’s take a journey through the history of Méribel and discover why you should book your ski hotel with us this winter.

The Origins of Méribel

Méribel a stunning ski resort nestled in the French Alps, was founded in the 1930s by a visionary British entrepreneur, Colonel Peter Lindsay, who sought to create a ski resort that combined the best of British and French influences. His ambition led to the development of a charming village that embraced the traditional Savoyard style, characterised by wooden chalets and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Today, Méribel retains this unique character, making it a delightful destination for skiers seeking both adventure and authenticity.

In the late 1930s, as political tensions in Europe pushed British skiers away from Austrian slopes, Lindsay embarked on a quest to establish a new winter haven in France. With the legendary French skier Émile Allais by his side, he discovered the perfect location above the village of Les Allues—a breathtaking, undeveloped valley ideal for a ski resort.

Captivated by the natural beauty of the area, Lindsay founded the ‘Société Foncière de la Vallée des Allues’ in 1938, acquiring land from local farmers to lay the groundwork for what would become a world-renowned ski resort. Unlike neighbouring ski resorts in the Three Valleys which relied on public funding, Méribel flourished through private investment, driven by the passion of British and French pioneers dedicated to creating a unique alpine experience.

Early Development of Ski Chalets
The first ski chalets emerged at an altitude of 1,450 meters, just beyond the hamlet of Mussillon, seamlessly integrating into the landscape. The name ‘Méribel,’ derived from the local term for a pasture, was chosen for its simplicity and beauty, with roots in Latin meaning “to look at” and “beautiful.” The inaugural ski lift, a télétraineau, launched in 1938, whisked skiers to 1,900 meters but was short-lived due to the outbreak of World War II. During this tumultuous time, Méribel served as a center for the Resistance, with chalets like the Corbey providing refuge.

Post-War Expansion and Chalet Architecture
After the war, Lindsay returned as a Colonel, reigniting the dream of a ski resort. He established a strict building code to ensure that the chalets harmonised with the natural environment, collaborating with architects like Christian Durupt to create specifications that mandated the use of local materials such as slate, wood, and stone. The first significant structure was a chalet-hotel named Le Doron, with interiors designed by the renowned Charlotte Perriand. The early community comprised builders, affluent British families and local residents who rallied around Lindsay’s vision. In lieu of payment, Lindsay sometimes offered land to workers, leading to the creation of hotels that still welcome guests today, such as the Marie Blanche.

A Flourishing Ski Resort
By the mid-1950s, Méribel blossomed, boasting around 40 chalets, 17 hotels and four ski lifts, including the pioneering Burgin Saulire gondola. The allure of the resort attracted a distinguished clientele, including notable figures like Brigitte Bardot and the Duchess of Bedford, drawn by its understated elegance. The Shangri-La nightclub, more recently Dick’s Tea Bar and now O'Sullivans, became a social hub amidst the picturesque chalets.

Modernisation and Preservation of Chalet Aesthetics
The 1960s ushered in a skiing boom, expanding the resort's ski area and connecting Méribel to the vast Three Valleys. Throughout its growth, the commitment to traditional chalet aesthetics remained steadfast, even as new developments emerged. In 1972, the separate village of Méribel-Mottaret was established, designed with pedestrian-friendly principles that prioritised skiers over vehicles. The 1992 Winter Olympics marked a turning point, bringing modernisation and new infrastructure, including the Olympic sports centre and the Olympic gondola linking Méribel to Brides-les-Bains and Les Allues.

Today

Today, Méribel is a vibrant blend of modern amenities and timeless charm, drawing a cosmopolitan clientele while preserving its architectural heritage. The original ski chalets are being lovingly updated or replaced by luxurious new residences, yet all constructions honor the guidelines set forth over seven decades ago. This commitment to maintaining a chalet-style aesthetic has safeguarded Méribel from the concrete high-rises that plague other resorts, solidifying its reputation as a premier ski destination. The community continues to thrive, with numerous local businesses operated by British owners, reflecting the friendly Anglo-French relations that have flourished since its inception. Peter Lindsay’s legacy lives on in this breathtaking alpine retreat, where the spirit of skiing and the charm of its chalets create an unforgettable experience.
