What's it like working a ski season?

Whether you are one of our very welcome guests or an inquisitive and/or potential employee, it’s always interesting to know what it’s really like working for us. It’s a very challenging experience but also memorable for the right reasons, it’s great  fun, very hard but enjoyable work and you get to meet loads of very interesting like-minded people from all walks of life.

At Alpinium, the process begins the year before, securing the services of returning staff and we must have been doing something right because many come back, often to the same resort and even the same chalet. However, Brexit presents us with new challenges. Our staff could be Irish, Italian, French even and who knows….our UK returning staff are hoping to come back if they can secure eligibility.

The first thing we look for is easy…”REALLY NICE PEOPLE”!...people we can trust to look after our guests and do a great job. That’s a big ask, so I often ask our candidates what they think makes a great chalet host and with their answers, I have compiled a list, it’s pretty extensive and you have to wonder just how special our staff must be?

This is what they said….Here goes in no particular order and the list is not all-inclusive!

  • Happy
  • Outgoing
  • Smart
  • Clean
  • Tidy
  • Great with kids
  • Approachable
  • Knowledgeable
  • Helpful
  • Informative
  • Punctual
  • Talented chef
  • Professional
  • Friendly
  • Hard working
  • Healthy
  • Presentable
  • High standards
  • Honest

  • Organised
  • Logical
  • Problem solver
  • Nothing too much trouble
  • Good fun
  • Interesting
  • Thoughtful
  • Considerate
  • Kind
  • Winter sports lover

It’s quite a list!

A winter season is a pretty intensive experience and it’s not for everyone. After all, most people would not give up their careers for five months in the Alps. Working with people every day is both challenging and very rewarding. Its’ a great way to hone your communication skills and it’s a fabulous way to improve your ski/snowboard ability. After all, you get to be on snow at least five days a week for 18-20 consecutive weeks. More time than many of our guests get to ski in their entire life and when it’s over, cooking a dinner party with style will never ever be a challenge and when it comes to getting down that mountain, you’ll be quite an accomplished winter-sports enthusiast. In fact, we are sure we will see you again in one of our chalets. As a guest or who knows, as a returning member of our valued and talented team. You will be amazed how your outlook on life will change, working amongst our happy and appreciative guests makes you feel good and you’ll find it easy to be helpful and considerate.

So, what are you waiting for?….If you are smitten?….Will our guests love you?...Why not drop me us line with your CV, a recent photo and a brief letter telling us why you would like to work for us and what you have to offer?...You might be just what we are looking for. Head over to our 'Work For Us' page where you can send everything online.

Bon chance!
