As you gear up for an unforgettable ski chalet holiday in the stunning French Alps this winter, it’s crucial to ensure your journey is as smooth and safe as your time on the slopes. From November 1 to March 31, driving in specific mountainous regions of the Alps comes with mandatory requirements that every skier should be aware of. Let’s dive into what you need to know about winter tyres and snow chains to keep your holiday hassle-free.
The beauty of the Alps in winter is undeniably breathtaking, but navigating those picturesque roads requires preparation. The regulations are in place not just for your safety, but for the safety of everyone on the road. Driving without the appropriate winter equipment can lead to hefty fines and could leave you liable in the event of an accident.
1. Winter Tyres: You need to have four winter tyres fitted to your vehicle, each certified with the "3PMSF" (three peaks mountain snowflake) symbol, along with an "M+S," "M.S," or "M&S" marking. These tyres are designed to provide better grip on snowy and icy roads, ensuring a safer driving experience.
2. Snow Chains or Socks: If you stick with standard tyres, you must carry snow chains or snow socks for at least two of your car's powered wheels. These are essential for navigating particularly icy patches or steep inclines.
3. All-Season Tyres: If you opted for all-season tyres, make sure they also come with the 3PMSF certification to comply with local laws.
• Know Your Route: Before you set off, check for road signs indicating winter tyre zones. These regulations apply across 34 departments in mountainous regions, including the stunning areas you'll be exploring in the Alps.
• Prepare Your Equipment: Make sure your winter tyres have the correct markings and that your snow chains or socks are ready to be fitted. It’s a good idea to practice fitting them at home before your trip so you can do it quickly and confidently if needed.
Getting caught without the proper winter equipment can lead to a €135 fine—definitely not the way you want to start your holiday. Even more concerning, if you have an accident in a designated zone without the correct gear, your insurance may not cover your claim, leaving you with potentially significant costs.

A toll badge is a great idea too (@emovis.tag or @bipandgo_telepeage) & we recommend getting European Breakdown Cover, carrying a First Aid Kit, emergency blanket, torch, snow shovel and ice scraper.
Vehicle preparation
We have a limited number of covered secure parking spaces at the chalets but these must be reserved in advance so do let us know if you want a space way in advance. Alternatively, you will find parking close to the chalets (you can always unload then park after).
By preparing your vehicle for the winter conditions in the Alps, you’re setting the stage for an amazing holiday filled with powdery slopes and cozy nights in your chalet. With the right equipment, you can focus on what truly matters: carving down the mountain, enjoying après-ski with friends, and soaking in those spectacular alpine views.
Stay safe, and have an incredible ski chalet holiday in the French Alps this winter! 🏔️⛷️✨
